Opal Horizon Limited (“OHZ”) was incorporated as an unlisted Australian public company in February 2001, through the foresight of founding director, David J Horton, a renowned Queensland geologist with a wealth of practical opal experience.
During the 1990s, David had worked as a researcher on the practical aspects of opal genesis and exploration models at both the University of Queensland – Department of Geology and at the Geological Survey of Queensland. He developed the desire to apply his findings to advance an appreciation of opal as a world class gemstone.
OHZ is vertically integrated and involved in all aspects of the opal industry from exploration through mining, purchasing, processing, and international wholesaling of the gemstone. The Company currently has one operating opal mine (Raindance) and a number of exploration permits in southwestern Queensland. The mine produces high-quality pipe and boulder opal. Situated close by, and within the same mining lease, is The Big Girl opal deposit – this deposit is proposed to be mined at a future date.
OHZ is a world leader in opal exploration and has numerous discoveries to its credit, including the Raindance and The Big Girl deposits. It is the Company’s intention to maintain ongoing mining operations to assure continuity of supply from within its own deposits. The Company currently has approximately 135 shareholders.
